September Special Edition

Labor Day is behind us and Fall Is in the Air.

It’s the perfect time to swap summer sundresses for cozy fall favorites and give your home a seasonal reset, too.

I grew up in California’s San Francisco Bay Area, where temperatures typically stayed somewhere between 65 and 85 degrees throughout the year. We didn’t really have seasons. Instead, we had Karl the Fog, who could bring a chill one moment and race back over the Bay the next.

There’s a reason Californians spend so much time outdoors we don’t typically deal with snow, big rainstorms, or dramatic seasonal changes.

So, when I moved to the East Coast in my 30s, experiencing a true autumn for the first time was exciting. Suddenly, a puffer coat made sense!

But I also discovered something else: seasonal clothes take up a lot of space.

For the first time, I had a distinct wardrobe for each season—and very little closet space to keep it all.

Enter Project 333

That’s when I discovered Project 333, a minimalist fashion challenge that encourages you to dress with 33 items or fewer for three months and pack away the rest.

For someone just learning how to manage a fall wardrobe, it was the perfect place to start.

Now, every three months, Project 333 has become part of my seasonal routine. I go through my closet, pack away what’s out of season, and bring out the pieces I haven’t seen in months.

Honestly, it feels a little like Christmas!

There’s something wonderful about rediscovering a favorite sweater or jacket after it’s been tucked away for six to nine months.

Instead of having one packed closet overflowing with everything I own, I have a curated wardrobe that fits the season I’m actually living in.

And that same idea can work throughout your home.

Give your Home a Fall Reset

September is a great time to transition from summer to fall not just with clothing, but with outdoor gear, school routines, entryways, and even your pantry.

Here are a few simple ways to make the seasonal switch:

  • Swap your wardrobe. Pack away swimsuits, sundresses, and summer staples in garment bags or labeled bins. Bring sweaters, long pants, light jackets, and closed-toe shoes into your main closet.
  • Reset the garage or shed. Clean and air out lawn games, outdoor toys, camping equipment, and summer grilling supplies before storing them toward the back.
  • Check summer products. Toss used or expired sunscreen and other seasonal products taking up space in totes, closets, and bathroom cabinets.
  • Create a homework station. Give school supplies, chargers, papers, and everyday essentials a dedicated home within easy reach.
  • Prepare your entryway. Add sturdy hooks for coats, scarves, and umbrellas, along with a basket for hats and gloves.
  • Refresh the pantry. Clear out expired food and spices, then make room for fall favorites like soups, pasta, teas, baking ingredients, and other cozy staples.
  • Prepare for wet weather. Add a durable doormat that can stand up to muddy shoes, rain, and wet leaves.

July is the perfect time for a mid-summer reset. You don't have to organize your entire home in one weekend—small, intentional projects can make a big difference and help you enjoy the rest of the season. 01 Refresh the Entryway Put away winter leftovers, donate shoes no one is wearing, and create a convenient place for sunscreen, bug spray, hats, and beach bags. 02 Tackle the Garage Group similar items together, remove broken or unused equipment, and create designated storage zones with labeled bins and shelving. 03 Refresh Your Pantry Check expiration dates, organize snacks, and create grab-and-go stations to make summer meals and outings easier. 04 Simplify Kids' Spaces Donate outgrown clothes, rotate toys, and clear away school papers to prepare for a fresh start in the fall. 05 Prepare for Fall Early Whether you're planning a move, downsizing, helping aging parents, or getting your home ready to sell, a little preparation now will make fall much less stressful.
