August + End of Summer Reflection
New Beginnings, Fresh Routines & Letting Go

I can’t believe August is already here.
Every year it seems to arrive a little faster than the last. Summer memories are still being made, vacations are wrapping up, and before we know it, we’re preparing for school, fall schedules, and new routines. As exciting as this season is, it’s also a reminder that life is constantly changing—and with every new chapter comes an opportunity to simplify.
This August is especially meaningful for my family.
As many of you know, I’ve spent nearly 14 years helping families organize their homes, manage moves, downsize decades of belongings, and navigate life’s biggest transitions. This month, I found myself using those same skills in a much more personal way.
My son is heading off to college.
Over the past several weeks, we’ve organized his calendar, reviewed important dates, created checklists, gathered everything he needs for his dorm room, and even created an inventory of all of his welding tools and supplies for school. Together, we packed up his room, organized every item he’ll need for this exciting new chapter, and made sure nothing was forgotten.
Next week we’ll be moving him into his dorm.
As a mom, I couldn’t be prouder.
But if I’m being honest, I’m also nervous.
Watching your child leave home for the first time brings so many emotions. I’m excited for him to experience college, make new friends, learn his trade, and grow into adulthood. At the same time, I know he’ll be managing new responsibilities, his mental health, a busy schedule, and all of the challenges that come with being on his own.
It’s a reminder that organization isn’t just about having a tidy home.
Organization fosters confidence.
- It cements routines.
- It reduces stress.
- It allows us to focus on what matters most.
Whether it’s preparing a child for college, helping a family downsize after decades in the same home, or getting a house packed and ready for a move, having a plan makes every transition feel a little less overwhelming.
Back-to-School Organization Tips
Whether you have elementary school children, teenagers, or college students, now is the perfect time to reset your home.
Here are a few simple ways to start:
- Create a dedicated homework station with supplies within reach.
- Establish a family calendar for school events, sports, appointments, and activities.
- Organize backpacks, lunch supplies, and daily essentials in one easy-to-access location.
- Declutter closets and donate clothing that no longer fits before buying new school clothes. Better yet have a dedicated bin for donations and or gifts for family and friends.
- Create morning and evening routines to help reduce stress and eliminate last-minute scrambling. I call this the five-minute daily reset!
- For college students, make detailed packing checklists and keep an inventory of important supplies and documents.
Small systems today create calmer mornings tomorrow.
